The Swiss watchmaking giant created a surprise this weekend by announcing the release of a special edition of its Oyster Perpetual Cosmograph Daytona chronograph, better known as the replica Rolex Daytona. It is no coincidence that the 2023 edition of this Daytona was unveiled just a few hours ago. It coincides with the centenary of the 24 Hours of Le Mans, one of the most emblematic car races of its time. And which made the Daytona famous, notably thanks to Paul Newman who wore this watch while participating in the 24 hours of Le Mans in 1979.
A 2023 edition in white gold
Rolex is therefore celebrating the 100th anniversary of the 24 Hours of Le Mans race with a new version of its legendary chronograph. Made in 18-carat white gold and water-resistant to 100 m, this watch features a black ceramic Cerachrom bezel; the number “100” on the tachymeter scale is colored with red ceramic and evokes the centenary of the race.
The white counters stand out on the bright black dial, the graphics of which are inspired by that of a historic Rolex dial. As for the Oyster case (40 mm diameter), it has a transparent back and is fitted with an Oyster bracelet.
A new caliber 4132
Another new feature is that on the left of the dial there is a counter capable of measuring 24 hours (instead of 12 hours on other models). This new complication was made possible thanks to the adaptation of the famous caliber 4131, renamed here 4132. It offers a power reserve of 72 hours.
This movement incorporates the Chronergy escapement, Paraflex shock absorbers and decorated Côtes de Genève Rolex bridges. In 18-carat yellow gold, the oscillating weight is openworked and fitted with an optimized ball bearing.
