It was March of last year in the middle of Baselworld. Tag Heuer, Google and Intel announced a partnership to create a connected watch. The web was panicking because it was the first smartwatch developed by a luxury watchmaker and above all intended to compete with the Apple Watch. The goal is to combine the best of three worlds: the power of Intel processors, Google technology with its Android Wear operating system, as well as the luxury watchmaking know-how of Tag Heuer. A total synergy of the best players in their respective markets for a win-win partnership.
The connected watch by Tag Heuer
Following this first announcement, we had to wait until November 2015 to discover the result: the Tag Heuer Connected. A very simple name, perhaps too simple but hey, why not! Its design is modeled on that of the Carrera, the most popular model of the Swiss watch manufacturer. It is powered by the Adroid Wear OS which works perfectly with all Android phones, but is also compatible with Apple iOS (version 8.2 minimum).
It has a sleek Tag Heuer look, imposing dimensions and a convincing selling point: at the end of the 2-year warranty, the Tag Heuer Connected can be exchanged for a special edition Carrera automatic with 3 hands with the same design. and the same materials, for a surplus of €1400. This is an exclusivity dedicated to owners of the connected watch and can be carried out in all stores offering the Tag Heuer Connected. Considering that Carreras with lower specifications sell for €2150, it’s quite interesting.
Housing
Now let’s take a closer look at the case. This one is made of grade 2 titanium with a sandblasted finish on the middle then brushed on the lugs. It measures 46mm in diameter for a total thickness of 12.8mm. These are very generous proportions which unfortunately will not fit all wrists. The case is covered with a titanium carbide bezel (a binary mixture based on titanium) with a specific treatment to prevent fingerprints, marked with brushed Arabic numerals in relief then the name of the model at 1 o’clock in a silver color lacquered.
We also notice the presence of a resin protrusion at 6 o’clock displaying the words “Swiss Engineered” which gives it a very stylish look. The push button acting as a crown with an enameled look is also covered in titanium carbide then adorned with a minimalist version of the Tag Heuer logo. The bottom of the box is made of plastic and then incorporates four small connectors to recharge the watch on its base. The whole thing weighs 52 grams, it’s extremely light!
Ecran & technologies
This Tag Heuer Connected watch displays the time as well as its functions via a touch screen with LTPS LCD display 1.5″ (3.8mm) in diameter and with a resolution of 360×360 pixels at 240 ppi. It is a transflective screen combining two technologies (transmissive and reflective) which offer a great advantage: the higher the external brightness, the brighter the screen. This allows in particular a more suitable display in direct sunlight. The rendering is perfectly readable, the colors are bright and the response to touch is quite good.
On the power side, its 410 mAh battery offers a battery life of around 25 hours and recharges in 1 hour 50 minutes on its base (mains or USB power supply). You must therefore get into the habit of placing the replica watches on its charging base every evening even if it can last until the next morning if you have not forced yourself to use the applications. In order to host its system, its main memory is 1 GB while its storage memory is 4GB for micro-applications and music.
